I bought this game thinking it would be incredible. It is a good game in theory but it feels redundant like you are doing the exact same thing over and over again with only small changes to details. I have played probably half of the game so far and I think I am done with it. I appreciate the concept but not the storyline enough to finish. P.S. if you see me selling this game then ignore this review :-)

Great game. Very fun. Cheap price. What more can I say. Make sure you play it with a cheap mouse because I almost blew
out my right clicker on my main mouse. The game's actions uses the right clicker being held down alot. My right clicker
hasn't been the same since.

Assassin's Creed (AC) is an intense and exciting game. The graphics and immersive environment are spectacular. You can interact with the terrain in amazing fashion giving you lots of freedom. Use crevices, door and window frames, landings, etc to climb just about anything you want. AC lets you ride a horse and fight from a mount.
The combat in AC is fun. It takes a little while to get use to, but once you do watch out. You must use timing and defense to avoid death when faced with overwhelming odds. As you continue the game you get access to new weapons and fighting skills. Before long you can do amazing counter-attacks, dodges, and grab and defensive breaks. The action is very fluid and thoroughly engaging.
Without giving too much away, the storyline is entertaining and will keep your interest. There is a duel storyline going where a modern day guy is reliving the memories of his ancestor. I found this part unnecessary, but it didn't detract from actual game. Yes, the whole premise of the game is assassinating people. So, no, the game is not for kids, hence the mature rating. Several reviewers have described the game as slanted towards killing Christians. It's not. It's really more killing everyone Muslim or Christian that gets in the way. However, the game does have it out for the Templars. They are portrayed as evil villains in the game. Most of the people you are sent to kill think they are serving a good cause, but their actions are misguided. Much like the actions of the main character.
Some things I didn't like. While you have tremendous freedom to interact with the terrain, you can't do some simple things like open doors. Also the environment is not destructible except for rare exceptions like vendor carts. You don't have many items / weapons at your disposal that could cause much damage, but rails could break, tables move, open a chest etc. Maybe I want to set a fire as a distraction. Oh well maybe next time.
I didn't have any problems with game stability. I don't think it ever crashed which is saying a lot these days. The only thing I had a problem with is the game opened as a window instead of taking over the full screen. This caused problems when the cursor got off the screen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I would agree that the investigations leading up to each assassination attempt do become repetitive. You don't have to do them all, but they make completing the assassination easier. The game is also kind of short, but you will enjoy the ride. I'm looking forward to Assassin's Creed II to expand the experience.

If you're looking at this page, you probably know that Assassins Creed is one of the most heavily hyped games to be released in recent years. What you may not know is that it's also one of the most badly overrated. Here's the rundown:
PROS
--Gorgeous animation: The swordplay that makes up most of the combat looks fantastic. But the real star of the show here is your ability to climb nearly any surface and jump nearly any gap, all without breaking stride. It's breathtaking to watch, and a lot of fun to play--for a while at least.
--Neat concept: There's a clever little backstory to Assassins Creed: you've been taken prisoner by a mysterious corporation, which is forcing you to relive the memories of your medieval assassin ancestor. This is the explanation for why you're controlling said assassin video-game style, for one thing...it's quite clever, but unfortunately the story falls apart soon after. See below.
CONS
--Boring and repetitive: You wouldn't think that a game about assassination could manage to be this bland. Most of what you'll be doing in the game consists of climbing up identical looking towers in very plain looking cities; killing a succession of identical guards; rescuing identical citizens from guards who apparently have nothing to do but harass one single person forever...the cities, though full of NPCs, feel dead, because the only dialogue you'll here are the aforementioned victims calling for help or demagogues preaching in the streets (which is how you know you're supposed to interrogate them! It's great!) Every single mission follows the same structure, and after you finish it you're teleported back to the central area to listen to pretty much the same schpiel from your commander before starting the process over again. This doesn't feel like a world: it feels like a video game. And while that may fit thematically, it makes for a singularly unsatisfying experience.
--Invincible: For a stealthy assassin, you aren't given much reason to be stealthy in this game. Part of the reason is that your counter-attack move is so over powered that you can basically just mash away on the appropriate buttons and carve your way through hordes of soldiers. Another part of the reason is that the danger indicator (which tells you how alert the guards are to your presence) is really unpredictable. I frequently had no idea what I had done to provoke an alert. Was it because I was riding my horse too fast? Because I had knocked a water jug out of someone's hand? (Yes, that will actually alert the guards to the fact that you are an assassin. I kid you not). It's all just so arbitrary, which brings me to my next point:
--What Suspension of Disbelief?: This game is absurd. Example: When you sit down between two people on a bench, the guards won't see you, despite the fact that you're always wearing your distinctive assassin gear and bristling with weapons. When guards chase you onto a roof, and you jump into a conveniently placed...er...box with curtains around it, they won't think to look there when wondering where you've gone. When you kill a major target, you'll apparently be transported to limbo so that they can recite a dramatic monologue. It's all ridiculous, and it all contributes to the impression that this virtual world is extremely fake.
--Dumb story: The story in question consists of people blathering about some sort of vague conspiracy, calling you arrogant, and...actually that's it. Plot and characterization don't really have a place in Assassins Creed. Occasionally, you'll get to play as the man controlling this memory of an assassin, which could have been really cool. Sadly, all you actually get to do is walk around. In a series of boring rooms. Very slowly.
In short, Assassins Creed fails to deliver a compelling world or narrative, and manages to reduce the acrobatics of its protagonist to something quite mundane. If you're looking for a good, stealthy action game, check out Arkham Asylum; but leave this one on the shelf where it belongs.

4 1/2 stars is more accurate. It was pretty difficult to catch onto the controls for a while. i originally bought it on ps3 but didnt like the controls so i returned it to get it on pc and it made a real good difference. after a couple cities you get the hang of it. The fighting is very fun and even more fun to watch. gore!! the plot was boring at first then picks up, becomes interesting, and by the end of the game is absolutely awesome! this game is definately worth playing through. the beginning might not be that great, but the game builds a lot of momentum. cant wait for ac2!!! gonna be a more colorful scenery with more weapons! venice, italy. cant go wrong!
