What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.

Let me start by saying this game is buggy and definitely the worst outing from what I would have called a solid development house. The biggest problem, even after patching, and this game is a year old, is that there are several graphic bugs. The biggest is the graphics fade. For instance occasionally I'll be driving down the road and the road will turn into what looks like grey mud with fog on top and then flip back eventually and repeat. Smaller issues continue to pop up as well, like all of the sudden the on/off freeway ramps will appear to be blocked by a long grey slab which, thankfully, I can still drive through it. I've had the same problems on two computers using different graphic cards, both nVidia, a 260 GTX and an 8800 GT. The many graphic issues with this game have been well documented so I'll let the rest go.
Installation and running this game is a ridiculous continual slap in the face. Not only do you need to deal with Windows Live, a first for me and not at all enjoyable or useful in my opinion (it feels like they took Steam, ripped it's guts out and tried to put it in a pretty box that they're gonna make you open). Second, Rockstar Social Club is a necessary installation and not only will it attempt to make itself launch when your computer starts but it must be running when you launch the game and will reinstall the auto launcher each time you run the game. This makes for a fun mini-game after I'm done playing of cleaning up after it so it won't auto launch itself the next day.
As for the game itself, so far I am finding it enjoyable even with the problems. It's not groundbreaking, there are several uneven spots, such as the Snow Storm mission that suddenly really amps up the difficulty and pretty much keeps it there, but this is small and you'll adjust, just expect to replay this mission a few times. If you're like me you'll enjoy the random chaos you can create in any GTA game and pretty much that's why I bought it, then you won't be too disappointed. I would have preferred to get it as a digital download but for some reason Rockstar is keeping the prices on these at any retailer at the original asking price, $50. I wouldn't pay that for this game then, because of the many bugs, and definitely wouldn't now so Amazon is your best shot at this point.
I have to say before I played this game, even after San Andres which I didn't like, I had a much higher opinion of Rockstar. With the way they handled and continue to handle, the lack of patches to fix these old problems says a lot, I wouldn't trust them any further than any other house that would make it's customers jump through this many hoops for what is still, a year later, an unfinished game.

My only experience with gaming was playing the Sims 2 & 3 on PC. I am not generally a console gamer, but this game looked really fun when my sister's boyfriend had it for his PS3. Alas, when he moved out, he took his PS3 with him. So nearly a year later, I see this game at Wal-Mart for PC and just had to take it home. My experience with this was decidedly mixed. I don't like having to sign in, even for off-line gaming. The whole keyboard command thing I could have done without. (press WASD just to make the dude walk? really?) If you could have seen me the day I bought it, you'd have died laughing. The names I called this game aren't printable. So the next day, I tried to take it back, but of course they don't take back open games (darn copyright laws!). So, determined to actually play this game, and avoid keyboard use, I then went to Best Buy, and the very awesome PC-gaming employee there recommended I buy an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. I did this and now I can play (albeit not skillfully...yet). The graphics are gorgeous and I really like the score/soundtrack. If I didn't have the Controller, I would have given this game one or two stars, mostly for it's complexity of commands. One suggestion that I could make to Rockstar is that they should mention/recommend that Xbox Controller in the product description. I would have just bought one right away and saved myself a trip.

Contrary to what many people say, this game isn't as hard to install, or play, as they would have you think.
Everything needed to run this game was included on the Dual-DVD set, so all you have to do during installation is switch the DVDs, accept the terms of each software, and click next a lot. The SecuROM is virtually invisible after installed. My computer's performance is the exact same after SecuROM was installed, as before and it has had absolutely NO negative effects thus far. Anyone who uses MSN messenger (which is a large population) should have a Windows LIVE account, so that aspect shouldn't be an issue. If it is, it takes 3 minutes to do (I timed it). The Rockstar Social Club took 5 minutes to set up, select an avatar, and link my Xbox Live and Games for Windows LIVE account. The Games for Windows LIVE is no different than an Xbox Live account; just like you have to set up an Xbox live account to use your Xbox to it's full potential, you must set up an Games for Windows LIVE account. On top of that, the Games for Windows LIVE will act just like an Xbox live account, as you will see your friends, gamerscore, and messages all from your LIVE account (if linked) and you will receive achievements similar to those on the Xbox version of the game.
Now, on to the performance. On a system with a Q6600, 8800GT, and 4GB of RAM, this game runs amazingly. My settings are as follows:
Texture Quality: Medium
Reflection Resolution: Very High
Water Quality: Very High
Shadow Quality: Very High
Texture Filter Quality: Highest
View Distance: 18/100
With these settings, on my system (Not Overclocked) I get a solid 35-40 FPS and the game looks and runs as good as I could expect from an 8800GT. I've experienced absolutely no video lag while running these settings.
All in all, most everyone here is fear mongering when they say this game will install a bunch of invasive software. If you have half a brain, you will be able to set up and run the game as intended. As for the people with relic systems, they should have read the minimum system requirements before purchasing this game. I've emulated the process, and honestly, it should take no more than an hour to install, set up, and start playing the game, if done correctly. If you don't have an hour to spare setting this game up, then don't buy it. The one hour set up time is a small price to pay for limitless hours of play.
